Grosmont, with its rich industrial past, provided
an ideal building for an art gallery. The former
Victorian undertaker’s and joiner’s
workshop and 1950’s petrol station was converted
some years ago into a gallery and studio. It has
now been refurbished, reopening in July 2004 as
the Grosmont Gallery and Jazz Café.
The gallery exhibits a wide range of multi sensual
art in a spacious and relaxing environment. The
wild moorlands and dramatic cliffs have long attracted
artists, giving the gallery the opportunity to
exhibit both well-known and emerging talents.
Great emphasis is placed on displaying each piece
of work in consultation with the artist, ensuring
it can be viewed as intended. Each artist is represented
through several works, allowing the work to stand
alone yet remain part of their cohesive philosophy.
The paintings vary in both scale and subject matter
from small studies of the heathery moors to 4’
panoramic seascapes and 6’ square figure
studies.
Sculpture ranges from highly imaginative ceramic
pieces to exquisitely carved driftwood body forms.
The gallery has also sourced high quality textiles,
forged metal, jewellery and ceramics to support
both local designers and those from further afield.
